The general idea is that it is better. At least it should be. Customer add still takes fucking forever.

Its pretty much standard that Fry's system go down at least once a week. Maybe it won't be the entire store, but it could be certain parts of the system. Its really a pain in the A$$ when it does go down though. Some of the guys at home office IS department are nice and really easy to work with, and then there are some that are total jerks that can't even speak clear English.

And I believe that most of the stores should be running on Linux servers that divide the POS systems into two parts so that if one goes down, the other doesn't...something along those lines right?

Randy Fry hire me and I'll redo your whole architecture. Pay me $100k/year though. I can work from home or at a local store.

i can handle system crashes, as long as it's not Black Friday, then I might shoot myself. Or quit, haven't decided yet. Any idea what it's going to take to get Home Office to give us stuff that actually works on a regular basis? I mean, do they not realize that people actually do leave because they are fed up with the line going all the way down and around?

I believe that one of the brothers is in charge of the entire system. And to be honest that guy doesnt know jack poop. These guys use store 9 as the dummy store to test their new equipment, and even before they get all the bugs out of the system, they start rolling it across all the other stores. The transition to XP was a horrible memory. At first they started using Windows XP home, and then about 2 months later they made us convert all over to XP PRO.

A lot of what they do is foolish and dumb. Its what made me quit...:face-devil-grin:

From a technical standpoint, I can see why Frys wouldn't change over to a completely different POS system. They have millions of invoices and TONS of customer data in their database; moving all of that to a completely different system would surely be difficult and costly. Sure this x286 DOS application was great back in the day, but it's not up to par now. They should have started a migration years ago but I think John Fry didn't want to let go of his baby (he wrote the original POS system, or so I've been told).

Anyhow. The move to XP was a nightmare, BUT now that we aren't using Novell, the system has become much more stable. Novell NetWare is such a terrible network operation system. I'm not exactly sure what we're operating on now, but it doesn't lock up nearly as often as it used to. The big challenge will come in about two month's time.

At store 25 last year, the systems went down for awhile on Black Friday. I took a nice long break in the cafe/break room and didn't think much of it. And now that comissions are in the shitter, I don't think that it'll be much of a difference. Who cares if I sell 25 sticks of sale ram, 40 sale routers, 10 sale GPSes, and 20 sale harddrives? I wont make more than $10 combined. Fuck it.

To be honest I believe the postive factors from a move to a new POS would outweigh the cost and headaches of the current system as it stands. Imagine the amount of fustrated customers you have that complain when the system crashes...think about all the money Fry's is losing each time the system goes down.

I remember one time, when the system went down, we have to pass out water to all the customers in line. They were getting really fustrated and I saw plenty customers leave the line and leave the store.

As I mentioned, Walmart or Target have a wonderful system that I feel that Fry's should incorporate ASAP to save the headaches in the future. But thats my opinion!

Water? Ha! We had a tele sales guy stand at the entrance to the line, apologizing for the system being down and passing out pieces of random candy. It was pretty sad. (I took a few Starbursts)
