Had one of my rare visits to Frys today. Was buying a Home Theater receiver....something I don't trust being delivered...otherwise I could have gotten it a couple bucks cheaper online.
So anyway, I'm looking at receivers I'm interested in , most I had already researched. A Frys employee decides to "help me" even though I do not want help. First off this dude knows nothing of which he sells. When asked "does this particular unit have on screen display?" He replys "They all do, it shows up right here on the front (pointing to receiver front)". "NO. ON-SCREEN....you know, the menu showing on the TV screen itself?" He then says "oh, yeah all receivers do". Alright....enuff listening to this Bozo.... "Thanx for your "help".
Not going away, he then procedes to tell me Ill need to buy a Monster HDMI cable if I want to get a good picture with this particular receiver. I say, "oh, really? Why?" "Picture degradadion". So I tell him "You DO know that a HDMI signal is digital and not analog don't you?" He says "Yes, but you'll lose packets of data if you don't buy a good cable". This is where I lose it. I say "Buddy, I don't CARE what commission Monster cables pay, and I'm a little bit tired of your bullshit.....LEAVE ME". The dude now takes off, and I don't see him even in the department anymore. LOL
Are Frys employees stupid enough to think in this day and age, most people have NOT seen online comparison tests against Monster? Or have NOT read the FACTS regarding HDMI cables? I thought everyone knew Monster HDMI was a profit scam...Hell, even Walmart now sells a Monster HDMI cable for $19..... a far cry from the $80+ electronic stores charge for these overpriced cables. By the way, I noticed a BIG endcap display FULL of $40 and up Monster HDMI cables...while the wall pegs for the cheaper cables were all empty.... either most folks ARE wise to their commission game, or Frys just doesn't order many of the cheaper cables, hoping folks will buy their over-priced ones. Either way....I'm always in for a good chuckle, on the rare event when I DO shop Frys. -

Actually yea. For every person who has knowledge of this shit, there's ten others who are either too lazy or too ignorant to do any research. There are people out there who believe you get what you pay for and if you pay less then 50 bucks on a HDMI cable, it's going to look like ass.

A douche??? I was quite pleasant to the young man until he started to lie his ass off to make a sale. I don't particularly care for liars or con men whether they are trying to "pay their bills" or what. A fact that most Frys employees seem to be unable to grasp.
I KNOW that part of working for Frys is lying to the customers, pulling random "facts" out of their @ss, and they generally see the customer as an idiot to score a couple extra bucks off of.....nothing wrong with a couple lies if it pays the bills, huh? In my case...there IS something wrong with it. Maybe explains why their parking lot was 3/4 empty 1pm on a Sunday afternoon.....Frys doesn't pull the customers it USED to....fed up with the B.S. maybe?
By the way, I settled with the ONKYO TX-NR717 (mid-line as I'm not an audiophile nut), and treated myself to a brand new HDMI cable from Wallyworld down the road for a whopping $14....setup sounds GREAT. I HAVE bought HDMI cables for $4 from ebay....that worked fantastic...but quality of plug housing is lacking, and you might dislodge the connector if you wiggle it too hard pushing in or pulling out. Have found the cables in the $10-$15 range have quite sturdy plug housings, and look/feel like they will last a lifetime. Aside from the PHYSICAL quality....I can actually say I can't tell the difference in sound or video between the $4 and $15 ones though. -
I tend to agree with 40037. You know the store pushes employees to sell that stuff. You chose to go anyway. I think you could have been more empathetic, and own some responsibility for putting yourself in a position to get the uneducated upsell, commission-driven treatment. The guy's just trying to make a living at a store that doesn't have particularly high standards.

Monster seems to have faded as a major focus item at my store in particular. PSC's aside, the management at my store mainly gives a fuck about us selling Norton products.
I hardly sell monster and nobody gives me shit about it. Sure they pay well, but i frankly don't want to waste too much time trying to upsell cables. -

You must be computers. I can't remember Monster ever really being a focus. I guess people buying A/V equipment tend to be more aesthetically driven and can be swayed by the (largely fictitious) better sound/video pitch. People in the computer department just want to hook up a monitor. A $80 HDMI cable looks retarded plugged into the back of a $150 monitor, but it looks slightly less ridiculous in the back of a $1,500 TV.
I have not sold a single Monster cable so far this year (though I did sell a pair of Beats by Dre headphones the other week to a customer with more money than sense - he asked for them directly, I didn't even sell him on it) because it's not worth the time trying to sell a cable that costs half as much as a monitor.
What's really ridiculous to me is the $20 Monster USB *printer* cable. It's not egregiously overpriced (the same amount at Best Buy will get you their cheapest generic "Dynex" brand cable), but just absurd. You can kinda sorta understand the argument that better cable=better sound/picture even though it's mostly bullshit with digital cables, you can at least understand why people might think that, but for a printer?! -

Yeah, I do work in computers. I occasionally sell monster when customers don't notice the cheaper alternative, but that's about it.
I hear ya on the printer cables. You may as well buy a regular priced USB 3.0 cable than a twice as expensive monster printer cable that's only twice as fast as standard USB 2.0 printer cables. -

It's awful how overpriced the monster crap is. Unfortunately for customers if they do not know about the cheaper alternative cables then they will be inundated with monster products. I know at my store we are not allowed to have any cheaper alternative products up front because they don't have a 90 percent profit margin and could compete against it. Frys definitely is in bed with monster and the customer ends up paying the price for it.

I have customers like you come in every day and looking for a problem or prove someone wrong. Junior, I have NEVER worked for Frys.
Since reading is not your strong suit, let me break it down for you...since when is not being willing to be taken advantage of "picking a fight"? Because I buy something from your store, I have to leave my brain and self respect at the door? Although you and others here obviously refuse to believe it, you CAN make money at your store WITHOUT bullsh*tting the customer, or treating them like a complete moron with a wallet. SOME folks just don't dig being lied to, no matter how it is "just the way things are done" at Frys.
Even though the fellow was incompetant, I would have had no problem with him printing up my sale (I'm sure a $900 ONKYO pays SOME commission?). Treat me like an idiot, and start spinning the lies.....I'm sorry, you just lost my respect and the sale. I'll just carry it up to the cashier myself.

I know it is not strictly designated for Fry's employees however 95% are Fry's employees, 4% are people that got screwed over somehow and ask for advise or people that are clueless and don't call to ask various questions. Then there is the 1% where you two losers fall in. You two rant about Fry's and have very little affiliation with them other than past occasional shoppers, why? . I just hope when I am 30+ I don't end up anywhere near your shoes! -

Nowhere does it say "for Fry's employees only". My affiliation with them? I worked for the risk management firm that handled their insurance coverages - until WE fired Fry's as a client because they were uncooperative. I used to patronize Fry's...somewhat frequently....until they started lying directly to customers, and selling used/reboxed crap as new.

For the past few years, Fry's has sold returned merchandise with a "sticker discount" (typically 5%, though sometimes more depending on item condition, etc) with a large orange and white sticker which clearly states it may have been used and returned. -

Nobody denies this. But the kicker is...when you walk in and EVERY box of a particular item you want has that sticker.....or when you get home, open that banded and shrink-wrapped box you THOUGHT was new, and surprize! That little sticker is on the INSIDE cover lid (and YES this DID happen to me).
I KNOW you work for them, and have a certain amount of loyalty to your employer....but if truthful, you would acknowledge Frys IS NOT the store it once was, and there ARE more than a few shady practices going on there.
I wasn't born with a hatred of Frys....they EARNED that hatred over the years. When I first started going to Frys I'd spend anywhere from $4,000- $10,000 a year there.... today, New Egg and Amazon is where I buy 95% of my electronic needs. -

If you see an orange sticker on the inside, it means the products was returned new, but someone had to open it to make sure it wasn't swapped out.
And I somewhat agree but also disagree with the sentiment that if there are a bunch of return stickers, that there is something wrong with the products. Sure if you see some crappy no name products, and they're all returned, it is a bad sign. The thing is, you will see a LOT of name brand products with return stickers, and there is no way you can blame Fry's for that. I mean if you see, for instance, a bunch of Epson printers with returns stickers, how is that Fry's selling a bad product? Having worked at Fry's, I can say that a different type of customer shops there. I would say that the customer base for Fry's and someone like Best Buy is different. A lot of cheap people shop at Fry's, people who just buy stuff on sale and then return it a week later.
Oh and Skullywag, you are an asshole. I mean really, first of all, there are what, 30-40 receivers at Fry's? Like anyone is going to know whether each one has an OSD on the top of their head. As for the Monster Cables, you don't like them, that's fine. I consider it a ripoff, but whatever. Don't need to be an asshole. -

Oh yeah true it is a free country. Nothing wrong what your doing at all, you do not seem weird and pathetic. You guys just have no affiliation with Fry's anymore and spend alot of your time posting and making fun of Fry's and their employees. I apologize for all my harsh words, because it is very obvious that you both have good jobs and important people, because only someone with a successful career has the time to do the things you guys do and nothing better to do.
I mean to come to think of it, I was recently at a local grocery store, Vons. I went to the meat department and someone attempted to help me because I had a stupid look on my face. I barked and demanded the meat without hormones. He replied most of them, I then had a snotty look on my face, since I hate life and people. I knew most of the meat had hormones! That dumb fucking shit head tried "helping" me again and said you should get A1 sauce with that! I barked once again and said fuck off I don't care anything about your commission! Then the guy walked again because I am an over weight troll looking thing and he is afraid he might get in trouble for doing his job, if I complain.
So now I am going find a vons forum spend all my free time posting hasty things about vons for a few years.
I will also be a smart ass to everyone because I unleash my angry from my life to people on the vons forum.

I remember several years ago going to two different Fry's trying to find a Logitech MX500 mouse due to the only ones being in stock having the blue returned sticker of death. There is a reason why people joke that Fry's is not a retail store, it's a rental store.

FACT is Frys DOES pump overpriced crap for the sake commission only. FACT. Deny it all you want, but that doesn't keep it from being the truth.

Don't forget, the digital 1's and 0's going through a monster cable are much better than the competing cables. The 1's are up to five times straighter, and the 0's are up to ten times rounder (or so I've been told).

I seen the spectrum analysis graphs from Monster labs some 0s can squish to look like 1s and reduce video clarity.

Monster cables have shown better performance on runs of 10 ft or longer and have better connectors. I certainly wouldn't want to pull down a 60' wall mounted screen to reattach a cheap cable connector that came loose. Plus the gold tips are hand soldered by forest elves! -

The reviews of the monter cables are all old when TVs were mostly 60hz. You wont find any bad revies from this decade. I Have a 240 HZ 3D tv, and I my cheap HDMI cables looked like crap. Time for you to learn YOUR stuff. -
