I tried doing a windows update and it said it was not a genuine version of windows and not only that their Office 2007 software they have on some computers say its registered to a Indiana University or something seems wrong! Why hasn't Fry's gotten in trouble?! I also noticed that Fry's uses some other software like Adobe Pagemaker and Photoshop and Im wondering if these are legit also.

I wouldn't be surprised because when we were setting up the windows computers in the cashier dept our DM had us call the microsoft activation line and made us tell them we changed hardware so we could continue to install windows on other computers.

    What is Software Piracy ?

Software piracy is the unauthorized copying or distribution of copyrighted software. This can be done by copying, downloading, sharing, selling, or installing multiple copies onto personal or work computers. What a lot of people don't realize or don't think about is that when you purchase software, you are actually purchasing a license to use it, not the actual software. That license is what tells you how many times you can install the software, so it's important to read it. If you make more copies of the software than the license permits, you are pirating.

Nice to see you Digg, sasquatch. I've loaded hardy heron on my PC a few days ago and it rocks. I am fairly new to linux so there is a lot to learn but it's easier than I thought.

At least when I quit working for Fry's 6 months ago I don't remember seeing any pirated software. If they had no qualms using pirated software they would have been using a more current version of Novell and they would be using InDesign as opposed to a 10 year old copy of Pagemaker. Add to the fact that they were still using Win2K and if there was any pirated software I sure didn't see it.

Merely because Microsoft says that xyz product isn't legit doesn't mean that the software is pirated. I have seen computers with legit licenses come up as invalid. The only reason that I seriously think it is pirated is why the key would registered to someone else.

They probably don't upgrade to the latest versions because none of new software are compatible. Novell isn't in the Netware business anymore, plus the Netware they used at one time came with some support service contract. As for the version of Pagemaker they use, it is the current version even though its 10 years old. Can a retail store that sells software even be guilty of piracy since they are an actual authorized reseller?i am a worm.

Since when does Frys use ANY Microsoft product other than Windows? They picked OpenOffice because its free. It's shit (well, it might be better if we used faster computers. 1.2 Celeron holla), but its free. There isn't a single copy of Office 2007 installed on a work station at store 25, or as far as I know, company (excluding home office) wide.

Store 25's v-con computer takes roughly 18 minutes to boot up last time I checked. It was running win2k.

Also: Theres no way that any computer capable of running the network and video programs for v-con is on win3.1 It's just not possible.

Back when I quit Fry's Store 7 was still using a Windows 3.1 box for V-Con. I mean I didn't expect a quad core running Windows Vista at V-Con, but running anything before Windows 2000 seems a bit cheap. I imagine at some point the motherboard or the CPU on the old Windows 3.1 box failed and they replaced it. For most computers MTBF is 30-50K hours. Depending upon the quality of the parts in the machine, you will roughly see half of all computers of a model have a major hardware failure after about 3-5 years. That 3.1 box is clearly a statistical outlier. At some point it has to die and unless they want to go on ebay good luck finding hardware that can run Windows 3.1 the only way they will be able to run 3.1 anymore is by using VMware or VirtualPC or some other virtualization software to run 3.1 inside a virtual machine.

For computers you are interfacing with you probably want to put the software that works well for you. But for a simple video conferencing application that just broadcasts and receives video why care what software is being used. It does its service then it dies and it's replaced. Who cares about Windows 3.1 when a year back y'all been running DOS for the POS.
