I just don't get the difference between Best Buy vs Fry's Electronics. Best buy just looks cleaner and more polished.

That's a huge difference in and of itself. Every time I visited Fry's, I felt like I had to take a shower afterwards.

Add into that, Best Buy employee's tend to be a lot more friendly, sometimes more knowledgeable, and you run less risk of getting a product that's been damaged. Fry's material handling is akin to the American Tourister gorilla commercial.

I'm a regular customer of Fry's. I've been to all of the stores on the West Coast. My favourite by far is the one that's closest to me; the new one in Roseville. It's clean, organised and BRIGHT. Although I shopped at the one in Sacramento for years and I can navigate it blindfolded, it's still dark and looks a lot like a warehouse. I still go there on occasion because I DO sometimes find a slightly better deal or to get something that isn't in stock a the Roseville store. But I keep wondering to myself when Randy will decide to pull the plug on the Sacramento store, being that the two stores are only 15 minutes apart.

I've also shopped at Best Buy for some time. But, over the years, I've come to realise that Best Buy really DOES charge a lot more for many of the same items I can get cheaper at Fry's. I'm a fan of open-box stuff and both stores have given me some deals. I don't think there's any disagreement that Fry's has a larger selection of stuff from the cheap 'n cheesy all the way up to high end. As far as customer service goes, it really depends on which store you go to. My experience is that while the folks at Best Buy seem a little more focused, I can't seem to find anyone to help me more often than not. A lot like being in Target or Wal-Mart...and we all know what THAT'S like. The folks at Fry's in Roseville (some of which I remember from the Sacramento store) are generally pretty nice and helpful to me. Lately, more than one will approach me at various places in the store to see if I need anything, which is cool. It's nice to know I don't have to walk all around the building to find someone. Generally, I can count on them to at least help me find something and get it, even if they don't know much about it. That's all I really need.

Sorry to sound sexist, but several of the women that work in the Roseville store cause me to drool uncontrollably. :face-devil-grin: Not the main reason why I go there, but it's a nice plus. One thing I do like about Fry's stores more so than Best Buy is the fact that they have a CAFE. Spendy, sure, but yummy. I can EASILY blow a couple of hours in Fry's...it's my playground. And when I get hungry, it's convenient to have a cafe right in the store. Sonic is next door but the only things I like there are their drinks. Everything else is garbage. I like the sandwiches Fry's makes for me and I especially love the chocolate shakes. :face-smile:

Oh yes...one other creature comfort I enjoy...the massage chairs. Yeah, I'm a fan. I'll never be able to afford the $1500 for one of those chairs but it's sure nice to dream while giving my aching body a relaxing massage while I go over my potential purchases.

One good indicator I have: I almost never leave Fry's with empty hands. Best Buy, well, I love going in there and checking out stuff, considering some purchases, but I often leave there with nothing but a brochure or an ad booklet because the prices were too high, many items have a 15% or higher restocking fee on returns or they just didn't have what I was looking for. The new Best Buy in Auburn is nice but I still prefer the Fry's in Roseville.

Almost forgot...I've only had ONE issue with returning something at Fry's. Best Buy frequently has some issue and sometimes what they offer to return to me is some stupid gift card that I can't cash or some stupid "Geek Squad" gift card that's even more useless. Please.

I've had my gripes at times but when compared to the things I do like about Fry's, I'll take the good with the bad. There are plenty of things they need to work on but, for the most part, Fry's does okay for me. More so for the computer repair tech in me because there really isn't any other brick-and-mortar place I can go to locally that offers a wide selection of components. That might be different if there was a MicroCenter nearby, but there isn't. I've never been in one so I don't know the difference. So be it.

    Just my $0.02 worth.

To the person saying you would trust a sales commission person. Who is to say they wont just bs you just to get you to buy what they want you to buy. Best buy actually gives you a lot of training on products and you wanna know why frys has so much of a selection of "great deals" because they buy other companies returned products and try and make them shiney and resell them. That's retarded. I'd rather pay a little more for a brand new product i can find else where. online, or best buy. I only go to fry's when i have to cause i get hassled by employees to try and sell me stuff i do not need. I had one ass hat try to sell me a laptop when i came in for turbotax. The best part he was serious..it would of been funny if he was joking but he took me to a display of a new laptop they had on sale. Whats even worse is the people that are not knowledgable that go to fry's for product is the commission based salesmen will tell you what you need to buy and even go to lengths to drop it in your cart for you. Sometimes i've even seen misled information. Just so they would get what they wanted from you, your money. LUL COMMISSION PEOPLE MUST KNOW MORE! What logic is that?

To play devil's advocate back when Fry's had a more liberal return policy a customer could return a product that they thought was oversold for the filmiest of reasons and not pay a restocking fee. Back in the day, I would argue that the commission structure combined with the return policy actually made Fry's a much better store to shop for the uninformed customer because Fry's would eat the losses of any stupid sales by their employees. For non-commission employees unless they can directly see a change in hours, unlikely in a large store unless you do something really stupid there isn't much reason to care if the customer is happy. For a commissioned employee a product that stays sold is a good thing and a product that stays sold when you have no restocking means that you satisfied the customers' needs.

BB gives a lot of training? That's news to me. The handful of people I knew that worked for BB said that they got very little or no product training. Admittedly Fry's doesn't give a lot of training either, but at least they have regular trainings.

Whereas refurbs, nobody forces one to buy refurbs and Fry's carries a lot of new items contrary to the stereotype. Heck, since adding restocking on a lot of items there aren't many open box items anymore either. Depending upon the item and the discount a refurb is a real deal for both Fry's and the customer. That being said like anything new or refurbished whether it depends on the price, the availability, and how soon a newer generation of product will be released.

BB has figured out an easy way not to mislead: give as little information as possible sometimes to the point of blank stares. BB certainly doesn't have a monopoly on the blank stare when asked a question, but they seemed to be really good at it.

The big difference that still separates Fry's from BB is selection. Fry's return policy pretty much is almost identical to BB now since they now do restocking on computers and cameras so that advantage is largely gone. Once upon a time Fry's had quite a few knowledgeable employees, but increasingly management greed for the lowest labor costs has driven away the little talent that the store had. BB in my experience never really paid very well and focused far more on part timers than Fry's so there used to be a bit of an advantage in employee knowledge, but most of that advantage has faded as Fry's has refocused on selling cheap stuff cheap and try to thin their margins in the hope of making it up in volume.

Fry's still has a decent advantage in prices. If it isn't on sale it often is ABOVE MSRP at Best Buy. Take a look at a BB ad and you will see odd looking "regular" prices. ($30 after $37 savings nevermind that everyone knows MSRP isn't $67 dollars.) Sure you can price match, but unless BB is closer than the competition why not just go straight to the competition and avoid a the hassle of price check? BB employees are supposed to verify quantity on price checks just like Fry's so unless it still saves you time even after waiting for a price check I wouldn't see the point in BB. In addition, on a lot of commodity items (eg. cables, accessories, etc.) Fry's generic brand are FAR cheaper than BB. Heck, sometimes brand name cables (eg. Belkin) are cheaper @ Fry's than BB's generic cables. $30+ for a USB cable? And it isn't even a brand name? Forget that... BB I've noticed recently BB has gotten a little less crazy on their private label stuff, but Fry's generic cables and accessories are still often 50%+ cheaper.

It isn't a huge advantage, but Fry's opens a lot earlier on weekdays (8 vs. 10). If you need something first thing in the morning Fry's may be your only choice.

Beyond being a little cleaner and having a lot more locations, which can making getting to a store more convenient I can't say much in Best Buy's favor. Fry's is no shopping paradise, but BB isn't much of a better alternative.

Lurch: Webster counts for H-town bro, that's three in Houston. Yeah northside might not be the sharpest looking store ,but it wasn't built from scratch. Other two stores are sick as hell, pretty clean too. Closest Big Box to South Houston is Best Buy on Gessner, seriously there is no comparison, not even close! You know what, come to think about it, the Best Buy down off of Sweetwater isn't even close ether. I've been shopping all of these stores since they opened. Don't forget about poor 'ol Circuit City on Fondren...R.I.P.

Now the Webster store is so sick nothing from Galveston to Almeda even comes close at all,at all.

This guy speaks truth. I LOVE the Frys at webster.

All I know about the Webster store is they are space themed. As a space nut, I approve.
