I think its stupid to help other people in another language when the official language is english. Plus we don't get paid more to help in another language. I personally prefer to talk in my official language and not another language. If the customer wants they should provide their own translator or bring someone who could help them. Plus most of the people who can't speak english are cheap as hell and never buy warranties, thus why should I spend extra time and do extra work for less money. I try to not help in another language unless absolutely necessary, which usually means no one else can help them.Fry's is corrupt I am here to talk about it.

Hey, you're there to work. Your logic does not make sense. Maybe you were hired because you speak that foreign language. You see a lot of mexicans working at mexican busy places. They're not there just because they're mexican. -

While I don't think it should be required to speak in another language, in actuality you are going to miss out on sales if you refuse to speak anything but English to your customers. That is just a fact.

I have heard that it is against company policy to speak any other language on the floor except english;Unless the customer directly asks you to speak to them in thier native language. -

For the most part, Flea is right. After all, stereotypes exist for a reason. Dean is not too far off either. Ask anyone from Spain where they speak SPANISH. What they speak in Mexico might as well be an officially different dialect.

I speak Japanese. When I worked in retail I had no problem helping out Japanese customers. Extending great customer service is supposed to be the point of going out of your way to speak another language. If we talk about Spanish, anywhere else WILL pay you a dollar more per hour if you speak it. I speak quite a bit of Spanish and also had no problems extending what I could to Spanish speaking customers. Then again, they really should bring a retail phrase book with them anywhere they go. I do when I visit a foreign place. Unless is Mexico, in which case I get around just fine on the Spanish I speak.Superhero!

What U.S. document denotes English as the official language?
From the founding of the United States there was a great amount of debate about weather or not English should be the official language. It was decided, that there would be no official language because the ethnic and national inhabitants of the Americas was destined to change throughout the course of time.

Not really. Statistically, the people that need someone that speaks Spanish don't have a lot of money. If you're always called to help Hispanics, you're not getting very good customers. (Financially)

I disagree with spanish speaking customers being cheap. They always buy five year PSCs with me. They put all there trust in you. It helps that I'm a nice looking blue-eyed blonde haired suburban kid. You get another associate to talk to the non-english speaking customers and just sit there and watch. Very easy for a sales person to make money. Also you can't judge people buy their race or ethnicity because you lose out in life. I'm a white kid and the hottest girl I ever dated was black. She rocked my world! Anytime I was selling to someone black, I would tell them I was dating a black chick and they would trust me more! lol, any edge I could get on a sale....#24 Concord California, Computer Sales -

While they generally do buy PSC's, about as much as white people, in general they don't buy high paying items.

Some customers have no balance, they buy something they cant afford and now they cant buy the psc. Or they spend the least amount that they can and they actually have extra to buy the psc but they dont cause they are really cheap.

Unfortunately, English isn't the de jur language of America, just the de facto language. I agree, people should learn English when they come here, it's only right to do so. We don't ask much of them but that really.
It'd be nice to have English legally set as the de jur language. It would sure as hell save us (State of CA) and others tens of millions+ on translated material. -

The only time Ive ever been affected by it was when (Before the legal official language) I signed up for a cleaning job but there on the application it said "Must be able to speak Spanish" I was like "OH HELL NO THEY DID NOT!!"

1- you don't understand American history. Everyone in this nation descends from an illegal immigrant unless you're working at a casino in a reservation.
2- you'll make a lot more money if you can speak Spanish. you're obviously jealous of those who can do so.
3- take it or leave it, immigrants are a fact of life. bitch at them and lose, or ride the wave and move on to more significant things like your family and health.
It is true that it is unreasonable of them to expect you to cater to them instead of them catching on with the times, but you have to be pragmatic with the solution. Spanish WILL become a secondary language in the US given enough time. In a lot of markets, it is everything but a requirement.
I, for one, get better margarita drinks at Mexican restaurants when I order in Spanish
. But I am fully fluent in English and I don't speak in Spanish in front of other Americans so they don't feel left out. I understand the rules, I understand human emotion, and I don't abuse anybody's rights and feelings (if I can help it hehehehe)

If you believe Spanish will be a secondary language here you must live in the southwest. It is not so, going to other places in our beautiful country you realize there are no Mexicans over there. There arent even Mexican restaurants at some places. Sad times. Mexicans are so persecuted in Texas that they speak fluent English and run everything in English.
I highly doubt spanish will become a second language, ever, here. There are more asians than you are giving merit too. 34% of the population of San Francisco is ASIAN.Superhero! -
You are right. In the southwest Mexicans seem to have some control and most speak Spanish. Learning Spanish would probably encourage this. Aren't you Asian ayahu?

I've lived in San Diego, upsate New York, Illinois, Florida, South Carolina, and stayed extensively in Little Rock, Denver, Baltimore (MD). There are Hispanics in all of those cities or states.
According to demographics (2006):

14.8% of the American population was Hispanic (more than african american). Asian clocked in at 4.4 - San Francisco is hardly indicative of the rest of the US. Also, almost 20% of the population spoke a language other than English at home. Even though it doesn't digress into which language, I'm willing to bet that at least 14.8 of that 20 is Spanish, and perhaps the rest is Chinese, Japanese, Korean, German, French... but hardly the majority of that 20.
Now go to the tab that says "2000" next to "2006". All of these stats have grown with certain significance. The trend has only two points and is not an invaluable asset in achieving a strong conclusion, but I'm willing to bet (again hehe) that in 2012 it's going to follow a very similar pattern - especially now that the US has shown concern for immigrants and has shown as well that it's not going to hammer them as hard as they thought they would be (with the wet feet dry feet policy coming under strong scrutiny and the more recent Mexican blanket-admission) -
The way I do it...if a customer asks me if I speak Spanish...I start speaking it. If they start talking in Spanish with no intro...I ignore them. I'm not Hispanic...just because they are in CA does not mean they have the right to assume that I speak THEIR language. A few of my sups speak Spanish as their first language and they were impressed with my language skills. Mind you, I have to wrack my brains to remember some grammar rules and my vocab list has shrunk, but I can manage rather well, if I do say so myself.
