Your craziest customer story?

gobo760

I was having lunch with some coworkers the other day and we started sharing stories of our most memorable interactions with customers and that's when I started to realize... "holy SHIT, we have some seriously crazy customers who shop here...". What is your most/least favorite/memorable interaction you've ever had with a customer? One of my coworkers who works in returns said he's had customers on 3 separate occasions actually throw their merchandise on the floor and smash it when they were told they would have to get it repaired through the manufacturer and not the store since it was out of the 30 day return window.

Some customer was saying his defective HP laptop ruined his life, and bankrupt his business. He was trying to find someone at Fry's responsible to sue.

A customer didn't want to use a quote when she found out her salesman was Muslim. She was very adamant and the cashier called the supervisor over (he is also Muslim). The customer began to complain to the FCO sup then asked him where he was born. When he replied "Persia," she asked for his Manager. The Pakistani manager walked over and asked her what the problem was. When she saw the name on his badge, she walked out without buying anything.

This angry customer came in to get a loaner because she was told it would take 2 months for her computer to be repaired through the manufacturer. Anyone who works in service knows what a fucking insane process it is to get a loaner, and I had only been working there about a month, so I just BARELY knew what the hell I was doing. I call back to computers first to get the loaner, but they're too busy, so I go back there and try and find a "comparable machine" to what the customer had. On my way back, I notice that they've closed the bathrooms. "Hmm" I think to myself, "They must be about to take down a shoplifter" but I don't think too much of it.

15 minutes later, I find something I hope will be comparable. So I bring it up and do the paperwork for it (another 15 minutes) and she then realizes that it doesn't have a firewire port, which she needs for her ancient external hard drive... so back I go again to the cage to get another. I bring another back 15 minutes later that has a firewire port and again spend another 20 minutes ringing it up. While I'm trying to ring it up, her son comes back from his stroll around the store and starts asking me all kinds of questions about I don't know what (video games, anti-virus software, blah blah blah, and I'm just trying to concentrate on making sure I don't fuck up the paperwork). That's when she realizes that this computer doesn't have a bluray player like her current computer does, and she wants to be able to play her blurays on it. So I scrap the paperwork again, and spend another 20 minutes digging around in the cage, trying to find something else. Finally I just say "fuck it!" and grab the most expensive open box computer I can find cuz I'm sick of this bullshit and have already pissed over an hour away on it. Before I even begin the paperwork, I give her the computer and tell her to look it over before I start the paperwork. She seems okay with this one, so I do the paperwork. Between searching for computers, and trying to fill out the loaner paperwork with Remedy crashing every few minutes and timing out, it's now taken about an hour and 45 minutes... but in typical fry's fashion, I then make ONE mistake on the paperwork, and at fry's, a single penny on the track will cause the WHOLE train to derail...

I forgot to apply the open box sticker discount (even though it's the loaner account and no one is paying for it anyway), but they didn't notice it until AFTER they ring it up. So the front counter checkout sup sends the customer back to returns because she knows LP will throw a fit if it goes to the door as the price on the box won't match the price on the receipt. While they were going back to returns, I tried to use that time to take a pee, but the restrooms were still closed (WTF?). So I go back to my department at about the same time that this customer gets back, and she's now seriously bitchy and pissed off. I proceed to redo her paperwork, this time with the sticker discount, and take her up to the register to ring up the loaner. 2 and a half hours later, she's finally leaving, pissed off and saying that she's going to write a letter to Randy Fry about all this.

So LP checks her receipt, lets her go past, and right as she walks out the door, LAPD steps in to view, guns drawn, and takes down her son who apparently had been shoplifting 2 hours earlier when they very first came in. The cops were not only able to get there well in advance, but actually had time to get lunch, 2 coffees, and use the bathroom next door because of how long it took me to deal with all the paperwork and procedural bullshit.

I've seen printers get tossed across the counter, been threatened with more lawsuits then I can remember, damned to hell by some religious nutjob, and had a guy get overly excited when he found out Fry's sold hentai and he can watch animated porn instead of looking for it online and getting his system horribly infected.

Not only that, he actually defines himself in his profile as, "A modern day troll who attaches a camera on his chest and enjoys yelling and screaming at people who lie, cheat, steal and try to make up laws and/or attempt enforce fake company policies that do no exsist." So basically, the camera that he brought in to be serviced was one he uses to record people after he provokes them in some way, and he decided that the legally binding contract that he signed didn't matter and was "made up" so he felt he'd come in to the store, "yell and scream" at the manager, and record him after he got the manager worked up in to a frenzy because that's good entertainment.

That aside, I was trying to understand what the hell was going on, and I THINK what happened was this guy bought a camera with a PSC and it broke and it was going to have to be sent in to the manufacturer under the terms of the contract he signed and he probably threw a bitch fit when he found out it would take 6-8 weeks, even though he would have gotten a loaner. So at first the manager was going to help him out by giving him store credit so he could get another camera with the money, but the customer wanted a full refund instead even though the PIC was already bending the rules to help him out, and when the manager said he couldn't give him a full refund, the guy probably said he would then dispute the original purchase with his credit card company. So at that point, the manager didn't want to give him store credit because he didn't want the guy to buy a new camera, only to go home at that point and have his credit card company do a charge back to Fry's for the price of the original camera (in other words, give the customer 200 bucks for a new camera AND get penalized 200 bucks by the credit card company). Is that pretty much what happened? If he's at the PIC station, then that means he already chewed out the service tech and service SUP and neither of them knew what to do with him, so they took him up to the PIC. My guess is that about 30 minutes of him acting like an asshole to everyone had elapsed by the time the video began.

Some late middle-aged Iranian guy came back to the Fry's store I work at sometime after the 30 day return period to get his laptop repaired by the service department. Because he decided not to purchase a PSC for it in the first place, the service department couldn't really do anything for him at a price he agreed on other than mail his computer to the manufacturer for him at no charge. The guy winds up returning to the service department a mere two days later to ask for his laptop back and starts throwing a shitfit after he finds out that it was still being repaired at the manufacturer. Intensely butthurt that he wasn't getting his way, he commits an act of revenge against the computer department by super-gluing various buttons and keys on the laptop demos. While he managed to successfully get away with vandalizing at least 6 of our computers, LP managed to identify him through their intense sleuthing and now have his name and address.

His current fate as of now is unknown, but I guarantee the long dick of the law won't be too gentle with him.

no_more_mr_nice_fry:...His current fate as of now is unknown, but I guarantee the long dick of the law won't be too gentle with him.
lol, man we used to deal with that problem all the time too. Customers throw a bitch fit when they realize their machines are still under the manufacturer's warranty and that the Fry's PSC is merely an extension of the manufacturers warranty and that it'll take 6-8 weeks to get fixed. One thing I used to do was explain that "we are only mail boxes etc for computers under manufacturers warranty. Your PSC covers the cost of the postage stamps and the bubble wrap that we use to ship it for you on your behalf :face-smile:". Most often though I'd tell the customer that it's 6-8 weeks if we ship it, but if you ship it, it could be as little as 1-2 weeks :face-smile:". The reason I used to tell that little fib (and it was only when they couldn't get a loaner for whatever reason) was because I KNEW they would be in there every other day making our lives a living hell until they got their computer back. They think that somehow we have a button behind the counter where, if they yell enough, we'll give in and push it and their laptop will magically be back the following week.

Okay I'll share another since we're talking about how long it takes to do manufacturer repairs (common guys, I was at Fry's 1 year and I have about 20 whoppers like this, I think most people are afraid of being identified if they share their stories)...

So this customer who's had his laptop at HP and didn't have a credit card (so he couldn't get a loaner) is at the counter and he's been verbally blasting our supervisor for almost a half hour and it just keeps getting more and more heated. So the customer is in the middle of his rant about how everyone here including the supervisor is "a motherfucking moron" and this that and the other thing, and that's when the supervisor (who's also a brown belt in karate) just completely looses it and says "OKAY, YOU WANNA TAKE THIS OUTSIDE?! RIGHT NOW, YOU AND ME, NO FUCKING RULES! LETS GO!" completely red faced and veins bulging. The customer just stood there for a moment, completely silent with this dumbfounded look on his face. Then, coming back to reality, he sort of shook his head in disbelief, and walked out.

How many times have we seen fights almost break out in Frys? Customer vs. customer. The place gets so crowded when they have crazy ad sales that even people bumping into each other get cocked eyed crazy. I was with a customer who almost got in a fight but the other guy backed off, he said that if it escalated he would have stabbed the other guy, he showed me the knife he had on him.

Service is a magnet for these retards. In 21 alone I have seen a printer launched across the service counter and destroyed, a customer screaming that she was told the PSC was an instant exchange on her e-machine computer, and finally the asst. manager agreed to take the computer & psc back and exchange for another and refused to sell her a PSC on it and she started crying about that, had a person claim they were a lawyer and threatened to have me arrested and sued because he decided to format his brand new laptop and install linux on it and when he couldn't get drivers tried to return it and I said no, and had another guy throwing 100 dollar bills at us to do a bunch of random services. Supposedly we also had some crazy guy come in claiming he worked for the INS and was going to have our entire store deported if we didn't cave into his demands.

At 23 sometime last month .. A guy getting helped with a laptop was finished being cheap .. Another sales guy asked him for help but, declined it .. Said sales guy starts walking off to go to lunch while the customer flips a coin .. Looks at it and starts walking after sales guy while rolling up his sleeves .. Customer catches up with sales guy and starts taking wild swings at sales guy from behind.. Lucky sales guy was able to dodge the wild swings and then proceeds to be chased around the department by customer for no reason other than what side the coin landed on .. Customer looked somewhat possessed ..

My experiences aren't nearly so crazy compared to some of the stuff like almond's and no more mr nice frys posts, but I think some of them are a little funny. This one incident happened to me a month or so ago, back when I was still new to fry's and.....acted like a clueless bumbling idiot. I was on the cash register one peaceful saturday morning, when my 1st or 2nd customer of the day approaches my register (I'm not a CSA, though). Anyways, I get this guy who looks relatively calm, yet is oddly huffing a bit for being indoors, but I was unassuming. So I greet him like I usually do, and the conversation goes something like this:

"Hi sir, how are you today?"
"I'm fine, yeah. The level of service I got at the cell phones department was just unbelievable. I ask the guy for a cell phone, and he disappears on me for half an hour and doesn't have the phone when I find him. Is butch in today?" (butch is the SM for store 6)
"I'm sorry sir...but, I'm afraid I don't know...Would you like me to ask a supervisor for you?" (Make your judgement as to whether this was a stupid thing to ask. I was new, and asked him a generic question without thinking about it.)
Customer pauses rigidly and wide-eyed for a second, then explodes: "Are you serious? Would I be ASKING that question if I didn't want to see Butch? When I ask if butch is in, that means I WANT TO SEE HIM!!! *throws arms in the air and slams both hands on the counter* The level of service I get at Fry's is just UNBELIEVABLE!!!" (several customers and courtesy/returns/CS associates are staring over at us by now.)
"I'm sorry sir, I'll go ahead and ask my supervisor."
"Yes! Thank you! PLEASE!!(in exasperated tone)"
I ask the supervisor and he/she says butch isn't working at all today. So, I go back to the register and say: "sorry, sir but butch isn't working at all today. would you like to talk to a supervisor?" (I just really wasn't thinking about the situation much at all.)
Customer rolls his eyes and throws a hand in the air and quickly puts it to his forehead and closes his eyes, "Fine, yes, I'll talk to the supervisor. THANK you."

I bring the supervisor over and he/she asks the customer what the problem is, offers his/her sympathies, explaining a little bit of what fry's policy is, calming the customer down, etc. In the meantime, I was told to ring up the customer's items, which I did. And then he left and that was that.

It wasn't too crazy, but it was my first unexpected bad experience with a customer, and that killed my day. I was very offended, and told it to my fellow department associates and any other associates that I knew (who would listen), to which they merely said nothing. A couple fellow associates might have briefly gave me unprofound words of sympathy, but most said nothing. I got over it quickly by myself anyway. Hopefully this helps anyone who's encountered a similar situation who find themselves unable to move on from it.

Edit: Note that this happened a month or 2 ago, and that the dialogue most likely isn't 100% accurate. This event was horrible enough for me to remember the worst of it, though, which was most of the dialogue.

Sold the higher end Asus G series laptop to a customer who basically asked for it. Didn't even have to sell her on it. No PSC no matter what I said it had to offer and all this other BS it offers that we all know and "love". Anyways, a couple days later she comes back into the store and asks for me directly. I go over and ask how I can help. She replies with "why'd you sell me a box?" I have no idea at first what she means by this and I ask her what she means. She then replies that I sold her a box and no laptop. Realizing it's the Asus I sold her a couple days back, I ask her what she means, and that I sold her a laptop in a box. She then gets really pissed and starts cussing at me like I really sold her an empty fucking box with no laptop in it, but!!!!!! with a ream of paper in it. (WTF!!!!!) So I supposedly sold her a ream of a paper inside of a laptop box she claims. No fucking clue as to where she got this, I tell her that she will have to take it up with customer service (returns) to get her refund. She then storms out and I didn't see her. Supposedly she came back in with the Asus laptop box I'd sold her laptop in, but, instead it had a ream of paper inside of it and she claims that she never got her laptop. This lady is fuckin crazy. She then rants and rave up front for a while until a couple DM's and the SM finally arrive in the conflict to which she throws the paper at the SM and demands for a refund or the computer she'd purchased. From what I was told she ended up being escorted out of the building by police because she was getting in the SM's face like she was ready to throw down lol.

This lady brings in her laptop that's under PSC because the hard drive is failing and needs to be replaced, so of course she wants a data backup. She makes the tech at the counter swear up and down that he wont look at the files on the computer. So of course once she leaves, everyone gathers round to see what could possibly be so juicy on this machine, and... loads and loads of bestiality pics where she's doing it with her German Shepard. It was a little awkward when she came in to pick it up, making the counter tech swear once again that he didn't look at any of her files. As a matter of fact, he didn't look at them. The rest of the department however...

My next story isn't so much about a customer as it is about a disgruntled employee.

One of the middle-aged sales associates in my department who likes to complain all the time answered a prank call at the podium in which an AV sup who pretended to be a customer asked for him to hold 12 gaming desktops and 2 gaming laptops for him until he came to the store. The AV sup also said on the phone that he was going to buy 3 year PSC's on all of them. The salesman knew something was fishy about that, but nevertheless threw a shitfit and stormed out once he found out it was all a prank and hasn't shown up to his subsequent shifts since then. We are pretty sure he's not coming back.

I was almost done helping out a customer when a 50 year old guy came in with price match ( me in my head saying dammit) lol anyway the item he was getting was to much for me to give him a discount on, so while i was doing that he asked me how long is this going to take very rudely, then i replied just a sec, he says no its not a secound PRice MATCH it, i was new at work so i didnt speak back to customers i didnt know if i could refuse service so anyway i told him i have to go to returns to approve it, so i go there and they say that the pic isnt there so they tell the customer to buy the item and we will efund him he 15 dollars ( all this for fucking 15 bucks) then he starts cursing at me for us sucking or what ever then i got fed up, but then one of the other associates in my department defended me and said, do you want a price match or not if not me or him isnt going to help you so you should just go to best buy and buy it we dont need customers like you around here anyway, that said the customer angry goes and purchases the item and i left so i dont know what happend after that,

another time i was helping a customer and another customer interrupts me and tells me he needs help with tablets, i said in a minute sir im helping someone, so he say i dont give a dam who your helping, i want to see this tablet, your demo is broken, i told them they keep all tablets in the cashier he says take me to them, so i get very fustrated say i cant very calmly and my customer does as well so she tells him off that i helped her first and the guy points a middle finger to my customer and curses and me so then im there extremly fustrated, so i explode and tell him why dont you go to another store and buy there tablet because no one here wants to help a douchbag like you, so angry he gets my name and rights a stupid tell randy shit, by that time someone called loss prevention and they kicked the guy out

Seeing that all you do with your life is come onto this forum and bash on employees who are actually doing something with their life. Unlike yourself where you come onto this forum to bitch about the same things for 5 years. ObiWan simply believes that employees should behave like slaves, and that customers are their masters. That is his idea of the proper customer-employee dynamic. My guess is that he was told at some point that the laptop he ran over with his car wasn't covered under the PSC or some other stupid thing that has resulted in him vowing to spend his life criticizing every employee on Fry'sForum who dares behave like a fallible human being with emotions and feelings.

My experience was with this one lady who was a private investigator, and I remember that she always acted like we better not mess with her because she could make our lives hell even from Day 1. So anyway, she had this Fujitsu with a 5 year PSC and she one night she put a candle on her computer when it was open and it burned down and melted through the computer and the screen started flickering after (the inverter card started malfunctioning). In addition to the inverter, it also melted the computer above the keyboard where the power button was. So normally, Fry's response would be "physical damage, fuck off", but she came up with this whole argument that the computer was working fine for years after her candle melted her computer and after getting in a whole confrontation with the manager, he told us to try and fix it.

So that's where the fun begins. The computer gradually became known in the department as the "cursed machine". Anyone who touched it, only seemed to make it worse. Every person to look at it, seemed to have bad luck where they'd tear a cable or loose a screw or whatever and it would take them forever to get it back where it was. In addition, this lady was coming in every god damn day, and anyone who helped her, had to sit there as she'd berate them. It got to the point where, the moment someone saw her coming up to the counter from a distance, almost the entire department would suddenly remember things they had to deal with elsewhere in the store (take a pee, get a monster in the cafe, fill out some form in auditing, any excuse to get away so someone else could deal with her).

To make a long story short, her bad attitude resulted in everyone being afraid to help her, so her repair took weeks and weeks and the Sup 1 had to be the one to step in and work on her machine because everyone had already experienced her wrath. The topper was that, on one particular day, she started yelling at the Sup 1 when, once again, there was something else wrong with her melted computer, and he finally threw his hands in the air and walked away back to his station because he was tired of her yelling at him (just like we all had gotten tired of it). The result was that she stormed out of the store, and somehow managed to track down Randy Fry's home number, called him, and gave Randy this whole sob story about how horrible we all were, and how victimized she felt, and how this terrible terrible supervisor turned his back on her and ignored her after not fixing her computer that she had waited on for weeks and blah blah blah (just playing up the violins and the whole deal). The result was that Randy then reprimanded the Sup 1 severely. Not a 5 day, I can't remember what they're called, but basically if you screw up so much as a hair while you're on it, you're fired. Anyway, that was my crazy customer story. God that lady was a nightmare.
