Seriously, what's the point of this? Are we supposed to upsell them to the $300+ tablets that actually work? It just draws in cheap ghetto people and resellers.

The Idea USA is just garbage. Fry's is doing a disservice to it's customers by even offering the horrid things.

Did a quick google search and found this re: the tablet from an Android forum:

'These gray market Chinese shanzhai tablets do not have Google certification. They lack access to the genuine Google market. They're sold with older versions of Android. They lack any real tech support. If you're lucky, the device has picked up a following in the dev/hack community, so community tech support is available.'

Seems like with this thing, you're definitely getting what you're paying for. People would be much better off spending the couple hundred more and getting something with a more current version of Android and access to the Android Market. Out of curiosity, what's the PSC like for this thing? Is it for repair or replacement?

Here's the product page for the device btw: http://ideausa.us/produects.html

If so concerned with attacting "ghetto people", Frys can avoid this by posting "No ghetto people" or "whites only" signs on the outside of their building. ( I hear this was real effective in the 60's)

Oh, this whole thread has really contributed to a discussion. Nobody expects to get a Lamborgini for the price of a Kia. I am also sure nobody who has posted here has bought one of these $59 tablets, so is talking out their ass. It is what it is....a cheap tablet, and I doubt anyone buying it is expecting to do any power-computing with it. The underlying theme here is cheap tablets aren't paying commission where more expensive ones do, so cheap ones should not be sold. The ghetto remarks, as well as open smears against different races seem to creep into this board frequently also...Indians are cheap, mexicans buy warrantys, ect.... The REAL douchebags are the ones who see their customers as nothing more than dollar signs.

There is a market for Ipads as well as $59 pads. There is a market for Iphones as well as Tracphones. Whats the big deal? I don't see threads about other cheap crap Frys sells...$19 remote control planes, $1.99 flashlights, $9 USB humping dogs. If someone wants something....sell it to them, and stop whining about it.

Skullywag, most of the cheaper tablets pay about $4 for every $100 they cost. A $500 ipad pays $1.25, a $400 galaxy pays $2. Just another point in time where someone is telling you that since you don't know what you're talking about, you should not be talking. Nobody complained about selling tablets as a whole, which in general don't pay anything worthwhile and get returned in large amounts. Any ideausa, coby etc we sell have about 85% come back of. No exaggeration.

This. The price of the tablet (or laptop, for that matter) is not really correlated to how much it pays.

The tablet in question, the 7" Idea USA usually pays about $2 when it's not on ad (the regular price is $79.99). The cheapest decent tablet, the $199 Lenovo 7", also pays about $2. How can this be? Because the commission is based on the profit of the item, not the retail price. I make the same amount whether I sell the $200 tablet, or the $79.99 one. So greed is not really a factor here. However, I'd rather sell the $200 one because the $79 one is garbage and always gets returned. When I say it's garbage, I don't mean it lacks 1080p HDMI-out or a quad-core Tegra 3. I mean things like connecting to WiFi don't work at all on many of these tablets, and the touchscreen is so poor that it is nearly unusable.

When the junk tablet gets returned, I lose my commission, and the customer loses a lot of time and effort; no one wins. This is why I would rather not sell the crappy cheap android tablets. If this makes me some kind of racist or elitist or whatever, then so be it.

As Guest 6219 points out, I really don't make much more selling someone a nice tablet. In fact, the $99 Coby tablet pays more than the $499 iPad. Just like I make $13 if I sell someone a $599 Sony Vaio 15" E series, and I make $12 if I sell them an $1,199 MacBook Pro! Greed would motivate me to sell them the cheaper one.

Skullywag, if you like selling cheap crap so much, stop by your local Fry's and fill in an application! We're hiring!

That is the farthest from the Truth. Apple products generally have a 30% or better Gross Margin that you can check. It was said an IPAD pays $1.25. So Gross Profit has nothing to do with the commission rate.

As a matter of fact Fry's in the past had $0.00 on a Popular Manufacture's product across the board in one department because of an argument the Buyer had with the Manufacture. It was the salesman who suffered, and found them selves having to try to move customers off "This Well known Manufacture" to something that was clearly inferior.

Apple is a different beast as they (not fry's) control the pricing, and therefore I believe commission is also controlled by Apple. When I was in sales though (several years ago) I don't remember apple products outside of cables having that high of a profit margin though.

The "apple products generally have 30% or better" is not even remotely true. Fry's literally makes like $13 selling an ipad. The reported GP is like 2.5%. Imacs, Macbook pros, airs, etc generally have 6-9% G.P. Almost anything apple makes no G.P., but brands that create products for them like belkin, ihome, macally, cygnett, etc do have high margin. Apple TV for example does not pay, because it makes the store $3 last time I remember. Same as the keyboards, mice, magic trackpads and most adaptors ie: mini-displayport to hdmi.

I would agree... except I don't trust their GP values.

Couple of weeks ago we had an ad laptop that frys was selling at a $40 loss and we received 100 of them just at our store. $4000 loss? I doubt it. God knows they are willing to lie about just about everything else. Why should they tell the truth on GP?
  9.  permalink
Alt Q (A) ? Would show the the GP$.. On loss $ Profit items, in the system may show a loss, but the kickback is made after a certain time period on the number of units sold paid by the MFG. This way they can pocket the money, but the store and people paid on the GP Margins will show the loss.

Stuff like iPads and iMacs do not have 30% margin, which is why you never find any real discounts on new Apple computers. There is not a linear relationship between GP and commission, but the more profitable items tend to pay more.

Customer: I want to buy a really nice gaming laptop. My budget is $400. Will that Celeron laptop in the ad play Crysis 2?

Granted this isn't the majority. But it is a solid 5%-10%. And of that 5%-10%, almost everything they purchase gets returned because they bought the wrong product. The salesman explains to the customer the benefits of buying the better product but some people just don't have the money.

There was at least one of those every day. Total waste of time. They would either buy the ad piece Celeron anyway (and then return it and get all pissy cause it played Crysis like a Powerpoint slide show) or, after explaining why it won't work, they would just walk off.

Never had a problem with it. Battery life is sub par, but if you wanna pay a lot more for longer battery life then go ahead lol. If you don't own one or know nothing about them then don't respond to questions.

This thread is too funny. We get those IdeaUSA, Visual Land, Coby, and other cheap Chinese made pieces of shit returned all the time... usually on the SAME DAY the customers bought them. Of course, Indians are the only people who ever buy them. Cheap fucks... they just don't seem to get the term "You get what you pay for". I've also had on multiple occasions where they asked if we had even CHEAPER tablets than the $59 Visual Land junk... and asked for a bargain. You have no idea how much I wanted to say "This is Fry's... not your filthy street markets back in India" on numerous occasions -_-

The IdeaUSA tablets serve their purpose. The google play store allows people to feel like they can download applications, and the extremely low res screen is great for ensuring your child won't enjoy the porn they download. On that note, we sold one of the refurbished models for Christmas. The day after Christmas, the customer came in furious. The factory sealed refurbished tablet had shipped with a large amount of porn, and they had given their 10 year old child it. Funniest returns situation ever!

LOL! I would have paid to see that unfold. I guess there's no point refurbishing the IdeaUSAs since they never work right anyway. I honestly think it's a scam for Fry's to cash in on the 15% restocking fee (after the tablet is returned and bought ten times, it pays for itself!), and for IdeaUSA to then "refurbish" the returned tablets and repeat the cycle.

I bought an ideaUSA on black Friday 2011 for $60. I just wanted to try out a tablet to see if I wanted one. It had their own app store, not google play. It performed the basics. I dropped it on the floor and broke it a few months later. returned it directly to ideaUSA, and they replaced it with a CT702. Much better tablet, mostly because if had the Google Play store. Inadequacies: poor battery life (1- 2 hours), lousy Wi-Fi range, and the camera would crash fairy often. Also, apps wouldn't recognize the camera and not be able to utilize the back camera, which is most important. More frustratingly, it seems they had not configured the tablet correctly, as all of the Google Apps could not be updated, and I couldn't even load Google chrome. Worst of all, Android would crash every month or two, so I would have to re-set the tablet, losing all my apps and settings (even on the sd card). After some back and forth with ideaUSA, they sent me a replacement CT702, but it had the same problems. They just sent me the CT705 as a replacement, and it seems to work better. However, the Wi-Fi range is still pretty bad. They did, however, solve the camera problem: there is no longer a back camera. That really reduces the functionality of the tablet. Oh well -- you get what you pay for.

It's almost at the end of the warranty period, and most non-Nexus Android devices get precious little in the way of software updates anyway but there's a good CyanogenMod 4.2 release for it.

Made the upgrade to Cyanogenmod Android 4.4. B&N can keep their "support" (read: outdated Android ICS and bloatware).

I did my part for the Nook hardware engineers by buying one, and some official accessories. The hardware is quite nice, but is sadly getting outdated (but for $149 was and is an excellent value). It has the exact same specs as the Fire HD 8.9 (built by the same Foxconn people, too) which Amazon is selling for $80 more with even worse software and no SD card slot. B&N just can't touch Amazon's reputation, brand, and marketing. They weren't even popular when they got knocked down to the fire sale prices.
