Seriously, we have a job in which we are on our feet for 7-9 hours a day. Let us wear polo style shirts, slacks, and sneakers!!!! I know for a fact that if I wore sneakers I would have a higher "sense of urgency" then wearing uncomfortable, unnneeded dress shoes for a RETAIL job!!!! Customers DONT CARE!!!!!!!!!!!!! As long as they get the best price and service do you think they give a 2-squirts of piss how we dress.....I THINK NOT!!!!!!!!!:face-plain:

It's all about looking professional. Which is getting more and more important because we keep hiring DUMBASSES. Seriously...
Fry's needs to step it up. The young bright eyed kids that come in to drool over the latest 790i boards are the ones we need to hire. I'm so sick of working with people that don't know shit and sell the most random crap because it pays them more. Management needs to renew focus on the quality of the associates we're hiring, and addressing integrity issues. It makes me sick when I see old lady joanna smith putting complete trust in some kid selling her a single module Patriot DDR2 PC5300 for her new motherboard instead of a dual channel kit of PC6400 for the same price, sometimes less. Ughhhhhhhhhhh.
    Greedy Fuckers.

We work at a flea-market style Best Buy meets Wal-Mart (GM stuff anyone) electronics store (we don't even carry Pioneer and only one or 2 Denon items for crying out loud) not Neiman Marcus or a Benz dealer..............we are over-dressed......plain and simple.

Why do I have to look professional to sell a toaster or DVD.........LAME!!!!!!!!!

Exactly. It's all about the professionalism. The recieving guys and gals get to wear polos, but thats because they handle dusty boxes and are moving around a lot more than the standard-issue salesman. I do believe, however, that accessory sales should be allowed to wear the red polos on days when all they do is schematics. But of course that is a case by case type deal.

I've been noticing quite a few dumbasses lately as well. Wtf.

    ...

With all these goddamn commission cuts, I'm going to take care of the customer in a way that also helps me out. Old lady Smith isn't going to notice the difference between DDR2 5300 and 6400. If that 2gb pack of 5300 pays me more than the 6400 and costs the same, she's getting the 5300. Everybody wins. Every salesman in every department has their "go-to items." Items that are good quality in nature that also pay out a nice commission. If two motherboards have the same chipset and are roughly the same cost, I'm going to push the one that pays me the most. Unless the customer specifically needs that exact item that doesn't pay as well, there is absolutely nothing wrong with this. Of course, this is also a case by case deal.

The uniform is the least offensive to everyone. If some kid came up to you in a fubu shirt and long pants that are hanging from the knees would you buy something from them? Or a skater kid with a big ass mowhawk and torn shirt and pants?

While I think that accessory sales associates should be allowed to wear polo shirts when they are doing schematics or other merchandising, I think sales people should still wear dress shirts. This would allow customers to see that there is a distinction between people who do very little or no selling and those whose primary job is to sell.

For all the whiners, I would beg to differ that sales people dress really casually. In high end electronics stores where you are trying to sell someone a high end A/V system dress attire is the norm. I've never seen a high end A/V shop wear the sales associates didn't dress well. Quite a few of Fry's competitors like Microcenter require their sales associates to wear a tie so it isn't that odd of a dress code really. Only the big box stores allow their sales associates to wear polos. Even then for high end items BB's Magnolia employees dress well. If you are selling game consoles sure I don't think you should need to dress well, but if I am looking to purchase a $3K laptop anything that increases my perception as a customer about the sales associate improves the chances I will buy the unit. Obviously a tie and a nice shirt doesn't sell the laptop alone, but closing $3K purchases never mind $6K purchases every little bit helps the sales associate who appears professional and trustworthy for a customer who is on a borderline of making a big purchase.

The one change that I would make at Fry's is that I think that sales associates ought to be allowed to wear a shirt other than white. I remember when I worked for Fry's that I wore a navy blue shirt to the interview and the Store Manager said that I would have to wear white. The white only rule pretty well eliminated over half of the dress shirts I owned from consideration. White isn't the only color that people consider professional. White is more conservative than say blue or red, but provided that the shirt is clean and not wrinkled it is still professional looking.

Back when I worked at Fry's I remember that the dress code for ladies seemed pretty broad whereas guys had virtually no options at all. Ladies were allowed to wear any color collared shirt with a skirt IIRC. I remember one guy wisecracked that if he wore a skirt could he wear a colored shirt? Fry's holds a huge double standard on women and men it seems for attire. I remember women seemed to get away with shirts that are so sheer that you could practically see thru them. It is like Jack Nicholson said in As Good as it Gets, "they make me buy a new outfit and let you in a housedress." That pretty well summarizes Fry's dress code.

Needless to say I left Fry's and am happily wearing all of my non-white dress shirts to work.

Walmart has designed it stores to be dummy proof. There really isn't customer service there. They should keep reading down to a minimum though. Pictures are cooler.

News Flash! Fry's doesn't offer the "best price and service". Fry's prices on any real name brand, worthwhile items are on par with what you'd pay elsewhere.

And "service"? Please....how many horror stories have we read about someone taking in their laptop that they bought at Fry's to get it fixed, only to wait weeks and months to finally get it back, and find out that not only did Fry's NOT fix it, but they also broke something else on it.

In regards to our service, I'd have to agree that our service needs some work. I feel that our store has been doing excellent in pushing on this though and working very hard for improvement, achieving challenges, and pleased customers. I take pride in our store. Store 21 FTW!

Actually, I am more impressed with the Best Buy "dress" than Fry's, and I'll tell you why. Seeing any salesclerk dressed in a white shirt, that is ill-fitting, and wrinkled like it was slept in, is an insult to me the customer. The clerk is showing disrespect --to-- business, to walk around with his shirt almost coming out of his trousers. And another thing..... I find it gross, to see a white dress shirt worn, with out an undershirt. What the hell is that ! ! ! That be Ok in India, but hey, this the United States, and if you want to look "Business", then you wear an undershirt with a white dress shirt !

I never fail to be unimpressed by the way the Fry's clerks wear their white dress shirts. I am insulted -every- time to see this joke of a dress code!!

You can spice up that wrinkled, oversize white shirt look if you wear pink colored sunglasses all day, like some trendy guy I've seen in components in San Diego a few times lately. Really brought his professionalism to the next level.

I, too, have this hair color question. From what you are all saying I'm guessing unnatural colors would be an issue? I currently work at a store with "business casual" as the dress code and hair dying has been fine, which is why I ask.

I usually wore a tank top under my service lab coat, and I'd just button it all the way up so you couldn't see my shirt underneath. Sure, it would make me look like I worked in some kind of government bio-hazard facility, but at least I'd stay cool underneath. Wearing two layers of insulating clothing was never fun, especially given how they were always trying to save on the AC at our store.
