15 years ago I was exposed to Fry's Electronics for the first time when I moved to Southern California for school. They really are neat places even to this day. But they do have a horrible dark side. Both for employees, and the customers.
Too this day I always discribe Fry's Electronics with this quote...
"Every time you leave a Fry's store you say to yourself 'I will never come back to this hell'. Yet sure enough, a week later, or a month, you find yourself marching right back in there because its the only damn place with such a huge selection"
    Sad, but true.
When I was in my second year in college I applied to work there. I was hoping for a positon in the PC repair department. This was 93-94, and PC's were not a household item yet. Thus their need for repairmen was small. So I shot for a sales position.
Keeping in mind that Fry's is notorious for having completely inept sales associates, I did it anyway. This is not because they hire stupid or inept people. Everyone really knows that Fry's really doesnt care about making sure that their sales staff is educated in what they are selling. This is a management flaw, not one of the sales staff.
Now its almost humerous that Fry's puts little pictures of their sales people on the end of some isles. This to say "Hey if you need help with the products on this isle....look for me!". I'm not sure Fry's does this at all their stores. I have been to every store in the Los Angeles/Orange County areas, and two stores in the SF/Bay Area. It rings true for all that I have been too, for the last 15 years.
Too this date, I have never seen ONE of these people on the floor. I have never seen a live person represented in these pictures. My friends and I joke that Fry's just gets pictures of people in white shirts with black ties in bulk from the DMV. These people dont really exist.
Ok, moving along to my interview years ago..
I go in, and meet (I assume) their HR person. They immediately asked me "what made you want to work at Fry's". My response..
"I was in here the other day on such and such isle trying to get some cache memory for my computers motherboard. I noticed a picture of the sales associate at the end of the isle where you have your chips. I looked over the entire store for this person and never found him. So I thought you people may be in need of someone that knows just what the hell a cache memory chip is"
Needless to say, I didnt get the job. When I followed up on the interview a few days later the general attitude I got was that "I was over qualified".
This story should give everyone an idea of just WHAT Fry's thinks of its employees, and expects of the them. It also give you a good idea of just HOW Fry's thinks about serving its customers.
    Both suck.
I am still a firm follower of my quote up top. As much as I dispise the place, its simply the only place to go for the small and oddball things I need in life and business. Every time I go there I say "Oh god, what hell am I going to have to go through to get this simple widget". Every time I leave I say "Oh god, that was hell, I'm never going to come back". But sure enough I find myself doing it all over again a few weeks down the road. Trudging right back in there because I cant find some little widget that CompUSA, or Best Buy etc. doesnt stock.
You simply have to deal with it. Know what your getting into when you go, and dont expect any reliable help or information from the staff.
When I go, I always treat the basic sales staff with respect and pity. I know what their hell is. But I am quick to rail against a manager. They deserve no respect, no pity, nothing. Its always fun to see the sales staff trying to hold back their cheers when I have to chew out a Fry's manager in front of them using basic common sense over something that any freaking 7-11 could figure out. I'm not even going into the details of their stupidity. If you want similar individual stories like that just do a search on this website on Fry's and read to your hearts content.
Most of all I pity US. The consumers that have no choice but to go to this hell hole.

Absolutely. The managers are all just salesmen assholes who have stuck it out in the abyss long enough to be rewarded for their worthlessness. For more, see my post in Fry's Pros and Cons.
